The CAPSI Compounding Competition is a great way for pharmacy students to practice and build upon the practical skills they have learned in pharmacy schools across Canada. This competition allows students to work together in teams of 4 to create compounds that are therapeutically active and presented with the utmost pharmaceutical elegance. CAPSI members are encouraged to participate against fellow classmates in this competition for a chance to represent their school at the national PDW Compounding Competition which showcases the competition winners of all the local schools across Canada. With the increased scope of practice of pharmacists across the country, many pharmacy programs have reduced the amount of training that students get with regards to compounding, so this competition aims to provide more practice for students to build various drug delivery systems, including oral formulations, suppositories and topical applicators. The Compounding Competition mimics the process of formulating a new drug into the most appropriate form for use, including the on-paper calculations and groundwork to ensure the efficacy and safety of a compounded medication to be dispensed. Not only does the competition highlight the discipline and dexterity required to carefully create compounds, but also the teamwork involved in effectively communicating with your peers and the theoretical knowledge you need to perform the necessary calculations. Student teams compete locally by analyzing and preparing pharmacy compounds. Each winning local team (one from each Faculty of Pharmacy) advances to the National Compounding Competition at PDW. Each of the members of the winning team (consisting of 4 team members) shall receive: $250 subsidy to the upcoming Professional Development Week (PDW) where they will get the opportunity to compete in the National Compounding Competition. The winning team at the National Compounding Competition held at PDW will receive: • 1st place: 4 team members x $100 each = $400 The CAPSI Patient Interview Competition is a great way to practice your interaction skills in a clinical scenario, and offers student members an opportunity to truly test their professionalism during an interview with a patient in addition to their clinical knowledge of conditions. This is an absolutely necessary skill as a pharmacist in any part of Canada, and nothing will prepare you better for real-life scenarios with actual patients than the Patient Interview Competition. The competition utilizes a standardized patient to provide the closest simulation to a patient, and the evaluation is carried out by a judge well-versed in interacting with patients. Complete a patient assessment, identify drug-related problems, counsel and document patient interactions and compete to win! Individual students compete locally by conducting a fifteen minute patient interview, with the goal of identifying and resolving drug-related problems. The winner advances to the National Patient Interview Competition at PDW. The local winner of the patient interview competition from each pharmacy school in Canada shall receive: $150 PDW registration and $100 travel subsidy to be used to travel to the upcoming Professional Development Week to compete in the National Patient Interview Competition. The winner of the National Patient Interview Competition will receive: • 1st place: $400 Of the steps required to perform this exercise, the development of patient rapport will be the skill that receives the most attention. This is not meant to discount the importance of the other steps, but rather to emphasize the step that often receives the least attention in the classroom. Further, by focusing on this aspect of pharmaceutical care, CAPSI hopes to show the student its necessity and the fact that the practice of pharmaceutical care would be impossible without it. Individual students compete locally and nationally by conducting a 10 minute patient interview with the goal of identifying OTC drug-related problems, making recommendations as well as proper counselling. The winner at each school shall receive:$150 PDW registration and $100 travel subsidy to be used to travel to the upcoming PDW conference to compete in the National OTC Competition The winner of the National OTC Competition will receive: • 1st place: $400 Sponsored by CAPSI National and CPJ The CAPSI Student Literary Challenge is an opportunity for students to share their insights into subjects that are of current interest to the pharmacy practice. The pharmacy profession is dynamic and multifaceted, and there are a wide number of topics relevant to the practice that are deserving of our attention. As pharmacy students, you have a unique perspective on the issues that are important to future pharmacists, and we would love to hear them! With the changing role of the profession, it becomes more important than ever to explore how pharmacists can influence the community at large. Submit a pharmacy related article on a topic of your choice to the CAPSI SLC! The winning article from your school will be entered into the national SLC competition, for a chance to be recognized nationally across Canada. Local winners from each school will win a $250 subsidy to the upcoming Professional Development Week (PDW) and will be entered into the national competition. There will be cash prizes won at the national competition. The winner of the National SLC Competition will receive: • 1st place: $400 and their article will be published in Canadian Pharmacist Journal (CPhA) Through the increased scope of practice that pharmacists are attaining across Canada, the SLC also provides pharmacy students with a chance to advocate for changes that they wish to see within the profession. This competition aims to identify unique and innovative leaders within the community who wish to inspire change within pharmacy. Supported by Canadian Society of Hospital Pharmacists The CAPSI Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) Competition is an excellent opportunity for students to work together to review a patient case, identify drug therapy problems and provide recommendations using primary literature searches and established guidelines. This two hour competition, completed in teams of four, requires teams to submit a search strategy, the evidence found, references, and written communication in the form of a SOAP note and letter to the patient. Canada’s Next Top Pharmacist is a competition between pharmacy students of various years and is held in a style similar to pageant. There are different trials within the competition, and these feats of pharmaceutical knowledge and elegance can vary from school to school. Some examples are: white coat “catwalk”, talent and skills showcase, charades and a dance-off. The event is a platform for students to show off their pharmaceutical skills, knowledge and personal talents, but mostly their enthusiasm and sense of fun! The selection of candidates, the build-up to the competition and the promo videos help foster a sense of community and spirit. This event, held across all pharmacy schools across Canada, provides a humorous and social atmosphere for the students to take a break from their academic studies, mingle with others, and really just have a fun filled evening! A last night out with friends, before hitting the books for the final exams! The winner of the local Canada’s Next Top Pharmacist or Mr. Pharmacist competition is invited to compete at the following Professional Development Week for the ultimate title of Canada’s Next Top Pharmacist. Featuring contestants from all pharmacy schools across Canada, we aim to answer one vital question: Who deserves the final crown? Have you ever wanted to create a presentation and have it be presented to pharmacists or pharmacy staff members? Then this is a competition for you! Ask your local reps for more details!
