What is PDW?
Professional Development Week (PDW) is an annual conference hosted by a different Canadian pharmacy school each year. This four-day conference brings pharmacy students together from across the country to network, apply their practical skills and expand their knowledge on various health care topics. Attending PDW is most definitely a memorable experience for students get to learn outside of the classroom, establish professional relationships with other future pharmacists and become enriched by the culture of the host city!
PDW is also an opportunity to meet CAPSI’s National General Council members in person, participate and run in the elections for executive council positions, compete in professional development competitions and participate in the “Pharmafacts” bowl, and meet inspirational pharmacists who are leaders in their field.
The Memorial University of Newfoundland School of Pharmacy is proud to be hosting Professional Development Week 2019. Delegates will gather in the easternmost city in North America – St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador – from January 9th to 12th, 2019. The conference will be hosted in the heart of downtown St. John’s at the newly renovated Delta Hotel and the St. John’s Convention Centre.
The theme of the conference, “Exploring New Depths,” is particularly fitting as we delve into discussions regarding the rapidly changing pharmacy profession. As young professionals, we are just skimming the surface of our careers, and there is still much to discover below the surface. The conference keynote speaker is Craig Kielburger (Co-Founder of Free the Children, and Co-Founder and Co-CEO of Me to We), and the motivational speaker is Sebastien Sasseville. Educational content includes clinical hospital pharmacy in oncology, and a panel discussion on opioid addiction, while the poster presentations and CAPSI competitions will give students the chance to showcase their knowledge and skill. Finally, students will have the opportunity to network with future colleagues and industry representatives at the Health Fair.
The conference will kick off in true Newfoundland style with a good ol’ fashion Newfoundland Kitchen Party. Delegates will then have the opportunity to indulge their sweet tooth at Canada’s Next Top Pharmacist with the theme Jellybean Row. Finally, the closing ceremonies will make history as an evening to remember when delegates set sail for A Night on the Titanic.
The PDW 2019 Planning Committee is excited to welcome you to St. John’s in 2019.
